Dry needling involves using fine needles to unlock deep muscle knots. This is used in addition to our other manual therapy treatments such as deep tissue massage and joint mobilisation.
When our muscles get overused up the fibres don’t get enough blood supply. Muscles then can’t get the nutrients or oxygen needed for them to relax. This causes nerve sensitivity which makes the area more sore and painful. When we have an injury, we can prod a specific area that feels much more tender and can sometimes feel swollen. These are called trigger point, knotted tender areas that develop in our muscles. Often a trigger point is near the pain, or it can cause referred pain that affects other parts of our bodies.
Our physiotherapists perform dry needling daily which also requires a mandatory course to complete. With attention to detail our physios stimulate the trigger point with a needle. This helps to regain normal blood supply to flush out the area and release tension. The prick sensation can also fire off your nerves and stimulate an endorphin release, our bodies homemade pain medication.
Common conditions that can be treated by dry needling include joint issues, disc issues, tendonitis, tension headaches, spinal problems, limb pain and night cramps.
